High on a ridge, with majestic views of the Hudson River, the entire Catskill Range, the Berkshires and beyond, is 'Tailings,' the site of a former 19th century iron ore mine. Ivy-covered columns, some fallen, suggesting a distant past, dominate the approach to the house. A spacious light-filled 85' glass and rusticated block entranceway connects the 5,000 sq. ft. complex of 4 pavilions, each representing a different period of architecture. Post-Modern: the guest apartment, with en suite bath and private deck overlooking gardens and the Berkshires. Palladian: the Music Room, a large triangular-shaped room with truncated corners, a faux limestone floor, fireplace and a soaring domed ceiling. Its Palladian doors open to the columned portico overlooking the Hudson River Valley. Modern: kitchen/dining pavilion, with a slate floor salvaged from the renovation of the NYS Museum, a raised fireplace, sky light, and sliding glass doors that open on to the west lawn. Greek Revival: the master bedroom, reached by a glass-enclosed walkway, with a spacious en suite bath and dressing room and an adjoining library with floor-to-ceiling windows. Each pavilion was designed to have a view of the valley. Outside, paths connect woodland plantings, flower gardens and gravel paved patios. The ivy and climbing euonymus covering most of the exterior walls, softens and tempers the concrete and glass exterior. 'Tailings' is a masterful blend of architecture, design and nature. The use of reclaimed materials with glass and concrete create a multidimensional masterpiece. 10 minutes from the city of Hudson and Amtrak.
